Miss Blue
Opt-outs and suppression

They said stop.
That should be the end of it.

STOP is honoured on every project from the first day, on every route out of Miss Blue, without anybody having to remember to switch it on.

Enforced, not documented

One list.
Every way out.

A suppression list that only the compose box checks is a suppression list that fails the first time somebody schedules something. Miss Blue checks it on the send path itself, so a typed message, a scheduled one, an announcement and an automation all hit the same gate.

What it covers

The parts people get wrong.

Most of the damage in opt-out handling is done by matching too loosely, forgetting the queue, or confusing a recipient’s decision with the company’s.

01

STOP works on day one

On by default for every project. STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, QUIT and the rest are recognised as the whole message, and so are plain requests like "stop texting me". "Stop by at three" is still a sentence, not an opt-out.

02

START puts them back

Somebody who changes their mind can say so. The inbound path never consults the suppression list, so a message asking to come back always arrives.

03

A list you can edit

Add a number by hand when somebody asks in person, on a call, or by email. Every entry records who and when, so a decision can be explained later.

04

Blocks are a different thing

An opt-out is the recipient's decision; a block is yours. They look identical in a table and have different reversal rules, so Miss Blue keeps them apart.

What happens when somebody says stop

Immediately,
and backwards too.

Suppressing a number is not only about the next message. It is about the three already waiting to go.

  1. 01
    The word is matched whole

Case and punctuation are normalised, then the entire message must be the keyword. Nothing fires on a word buried in a sentence.

  2. 02
    They go on the list

Scoped to the project, with the reason and the moment recorded.

  3. 03
    Anything queued is cancelled

Scheduled messages and announcement recipients for that person are stopped, not merely skipped later.

  4. 04
    Every route is closed

Typed, scheduled, announced, automated or through the API — they all go through one gate, and it is shut.

Frequently asked questions

What teams ask about opt-outs.

Do I have to turn this on?+

No. Honouring STOP is on by default for every project. You can see the setting, and it is there so you know what is happening rather than so you can forget to enable it.

Which words count?+

STOP, STOPALL, STOP ALL, QUIT, END, REVOKE, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, OPTOUT and OPT OUT. START, UNSTOP, OPTIN and OPT IN put somebody back.

What if somebody writes "please stop sending me these"?+

That opts them out. Plain requests like "please stop sending me these", "stop texting me" or "take me off your list" count when they are what the sentence says, while "cancel my 3pm" and "why did you stop texting me?" do not. Anything else you can add to the list by hand in one click, or from your own integration with any of the project's API keys.

Is the list shared across my whole account?+

It is per project. Somebody who opts out of your marketing project has not opted out of your support line, and treating those as the same list is how a customer stops getting the message they actually wanted.

What is the difference between an opt-out and a block?+

An opt-out is the recipient's decision and can be reversed by them saying START. A block is your organisation's decision and is reversed by you. They look identical in a table and behave differently, so Miss Blue keeps them in separate lists.

Does a STOP reply still reach my inbox?+

Yes. Inbound is never suppressed — that is what makes START work, and it means you can see what somebody said when they left.

What happens to messages already scheduled for that person?+

They are cancelled, and so is their place in any running announcement. A suppression that only applies to future sends is not a suppression.

Can I manage the list through the API?+

Yes. Add, remove and read suppressions through the REST API, so a CRM or preference centre can be the source of truth if you want it to be.

Does this make me compliant?+

It gives you the mechanism, honoured consistently and recorded. Consent, sender identification and the law that applies where your customers live are still yours to get right — no vendor can take that on for you.
